How to Photograph Receipts for Maximum OCR Accuracy
High-megapixel cameras often produce illegible OCR because of flashlight reflection and motion blur. Follow this 4-step protocol to ensure clean, single-turn extraction.
1. Use a Dark Contrast Surface
Place white thermal receipts on a dark desk or tabletop. Boundary detection algorithms rely on edge contrast to deskew rotation angles and crop margins cleanly.
2. Disable Camera Flash
Thermal receipt paper is coated and semi-reflective. Direct smartphone flash creates whiteout glare that permanently destroys numbers. Use diffuse room lighting instead.
3. Capture All Four Corners
Ensure the store header at the top and the payment total at the bottom are both comfortably inside the camera frame. Leave approximately 0.5 inches of margin around all sides.
4. Hold Camera Parallel (Birds-Eye View)
Shoot directly downwards from 12 inches away to eliminate 3D perspective distortion (keystoning).
